Our livers are AMAZING. They are one of the organs responsible for processing toxins that come through the blood. They are also one of the organs responsible for supporting our immune system, and processing hormones. Usually the liver does its job well, which is why so many of us are still here despite treating our bodies less than optimally.
There is a lot of debate between health professionals when it comes to liver detoxes. Some say a detox makes no sense since the livers job is to detox. Let me ask you this: if your pool filter gets full of junk, do you leave it because the filters job is to filter the pool? NO! You clean it so that it can clear more junk out of the pool! It’s not that the filter isn’t working, it’s that it works better when it’s clean. While the liver does not work exactly like a pool filter, it does have the job of keeping our bodies clean. The word detox is often overused, what we should focus on is helping our liver do its job!
When our livers were created there was no pollution, no chemical cleaning agents, no makeup, no deodorant, no shampoo, no pesticides, and no genetically modified food. The only toxins our livers would have had to process is the naturally occurring toxins in food and water. We put so many things in the air, in our mouths, and on our skin that we shouldn’t be surprised if our livers are overworked.
I’m not recommending you do a fast, or buy into a liver detox supplement you saw on TV, but there are some great natural ways to help your liver do its job. I want to share some of them with you today!
First, eat whole foods and little sugar. This is the big one. What you put in your body every single day matters. If you are already living a healthy lifestyle move on to the recommended natural remedies below.
Water– Hydration! Water is needed for every process in the body. In order to flush toxins out you must have water. I love having a warm glass of lemon water in the morning to help stimulate digestion and help flush out anything my body doesn’t need.
Dandelion Tea– You can buy this at your local health food store. It is also a natural diuretic so make sure you drink lots of water.
Beets- These purple root vegetables are delicious roasted in the oven. Beets contain betaine, which helps protect the liver, and stimulates the flow of bile.
Garlic– Garlic helps activate liver enzymes!
Green Tea– Green Tea protects the livers cells and boosts the immune system.
Turmeric– Turmeric has liver protecting properties. Sprinkle it in your smoothie or on some baked chicken. Turmeric does have interactions with certain medications, check with your Dr. about taking turmeric if you are currently taking medication.
There are many other natural supplements that can help improve liver function. I have only listed a few! Many of these supplements do a lot more than support the liver, many of the medicines we need can be found in nature and we should seek them out. Take care of your body and your body will take care of you!
